How to avoid semi truck financing scams
Updated October 2026
Owner-operators are a target for scams because they're making big purchases, often fast. Most lenders are legitimate, but a few warning signs should make you stop.
Warning signs
Upfront fees before approval. A lender that wants money to "secure" or "process" your loan before you're approved is a major red flag. Guaranteed approval regardless of credit or history. Pressure to sign today or wire money right away. Payment by gift card, wire or app to a person rather than a business. No physical address or a website that just appeared. Terms that keep changing after you agree.
Protect yourself
Look up the lender's name with the word "reviews" and "complaints." Check your state's business registry. Get every number in writing: the rate, term, fees, total cost and buyout. Never send money to a seller for a truck you haven't seen inspected, and use a title check on the VIN.
Bad deals that aren't scams
Some offers are legal but still a bad deal, like a lease-purchase where you pay for years and end up owning nothing, or a long loan on an old truck that won't last the term. Run every offer through the comparison tool and look at the total cost.
